“Eu queimaria pessoalmente qualquer livro israelense que se encontrasse nas bibliotecas do Egito”.

A frase é de Farouk Hosni, o ministro da Cultura egípcio. Ele a pronunciou num congresso de seu partido, em 10 de maio de 2008. O diretor do Centro Simon Wiesenthal acusou-o de se inspirar em outro ministro da Cultura incendiário: Josef Goebbels. Acusou-o também de ter disponibilizado a TV estatal do Egito a um notório negador do Holocausto, Roger Garaudy, o antigo filósofo comunista que se converteu ao islamismo — o Cat Stevens de Auschwitz.

Farouk Hosni é candidato ao cargo de presidente da UNESCO. Isso mesmo, da UNESCO: o organismo internacional que se ocupa prioritariamente de livros e bibliotecas. Quem o apóia? O Brasil. O Itamaraty. Lula. Celso Amorim. Apoiamos um antissemita. Apoiamos um queimador de livros. É o nosso “Fahrenheit 451” diplomático.

Mas o antissemitismo é só um dos aspectos escandalosos da candidatura de Farouk Hosni. Há outro. Uma das metas da UNESCO, segundo seus estatutos, é promover os princípios democráticos. Há até um departamento de Democracia na UNESCO, que zela pela liberdade de opinião e pela liberdade de imprensa. Farouk Hosni é ministro da Cultura do regime militar de Hosni Mubarak. O mesmo Mubarak que persegue seus opositores. O mesmo Mubarak que pretende transferir o poder para seu filho, Gamal. O mesmo Mubarak que tem a prerrogativa, entre muitas outras, de nomear os diretores dos principais jornais do país, todos pertencentes ao Estado. E tem mais: Farouk Hosni é o ministro da Cultura do Egito desde 1987. Isso significa que nosso candidato para a UNESCO, aquele que terá de tutelar os valores da democracia, da liberdade de opinião, da liberdade de imprensa, está enraizado no poder, em sua suserania ministerial, há exatamente 22 anos, protegido por um ditador.

Para apoiar Farouk Hosni, o Itamaraty abandonou a candidatura de um diplomata brasileiro, Márcio Barbosa. Especulou-se que isso poderia ser usado numa barganha com os países árabes para eleger Celso Amorim à chefia de outro organismo da ONU, a Agência Internacional de Energia Atômica. Celso Amorim negou esse propósito, declarando que o Brasil apoiaria a candidatura do sul-africano Abdul Minty para a AIEA. Faz sentido. Abdul Minty, assim como Celso Amorim e Lula, defende o programa nuclear iraniano, opondo-se a qualquer medida retaliatória contra o regime de Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, o negador do Holocausto, o Roger Garaudy radioativo, o Cat Stevens de Natanz. Ahmadinejad esnobou o convite de Lula para visitar o Brasil. Quem sabe Roger Garaudy aceite.

Farrakhan Praises Obama as ‘Hope of Entire World’

CHICAGO — In his first major public address since a cancer crisis, Nation of Islam Minister Louis Farrakhan said that presidential candidate Barack Obama is the “hope of the entire world” that the U.S. will change for the better. The 74-year-old Farrakhan, former leader of the black Muslim group, never endorsed Obama outright, but spent much of his nearly two-hour speech Sunday to an estimated crowd of 20,000 people praising the Illinois senator.

“This young man is the hope of the entire world that America will change and be made better,” he said. “This young man is capturing audiences of black and brown and red and yellow. If you look at Barack Obama’s audiences and look at the effect of his words, those people are being transformed.”

Farrakhan compared Obama to the religion’s founder, Fard Muhammad, who also had a white mother and black father.
“A black man with a white mother became a savior to us,” he told the crowd of mostly followers. “A black man with a white mother could turn out to be one who can lift America from her fall.”

Farrakhan also leveled small jabs at Hillary Rodham Clinton, Obama’s rival for the Democratic nomination, suggesting that she represents the politics of the past and has been engaging in dirty politics.

Said Obama campaign spokesman Bill Burton: “Sen. Obama has been clear in his objections to Minister Farrakhan’s past pronouncements and has not solicited the minister’s support.”

Farrakhan rebuilt the Nation of Islam, which promotes black empowerment and nationalism, in the late 1970s after W.D. Mohammed, the son of longtime leader Elijah Mohammed, moved his followers toward mainstream Islam.

Farrakhan has drawn attention for calling Judaism a “gutter religion” and suggesting crack cocaine might have been a CIA plot to enslave blacks.

In recent years, however, officials with the Nation of Islam have promoted unity and tolerance among religions. Farrakhan now often quotes the texts of other religions, such as the Bible, in his speeches.

Farrakhan’s keynote address at McCormick Place, the city’s convention center, wrapped up three days of events geared at unifying followers and targeting youth.

It had a different tone from a year ago, when Farrakhan made what was called his final public address at a Saviours’ Day event in Detroit. The 74-year-old was recovering from complications from prostate cancer and months earlier had temporarily passed on leadership duties of the organization’s day-to-day activities to an executive board.
